Waste management for chemical & pharmaceutical production

Chemical and pharmaceutical facilities produce some of the most regulated process water in the industry with complex contaminants, strict discharge limits, and high destruction costs. Helios evaporation technology treats it on-site, without investment.

The Challenge

Why waste management is important for chemicals & pharmaceuticals

Increasingly strict EU regulations on pharmaceutical residues and chemical emissions mean that traditional disposal methods are no longer sustainable, either economically or environmentally.

Complex mixed contaminants

Process water contains organic material and other compounds that are difficult to handle with conventional methods.

Strict emission limits

The EU's regulations for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are very strict, where even very low levels of contaminants can lead to non-compliance.

Highly concentrated streams

Reactor washings, CIP rinses and discarded batches generate small volumes but highly concentrated waste that is expensive to handle.

Advanced Destruction

Many chemical and pharmaceutical waste streams are classified as hazardous waste, which significantly increases transportation and destruction costs.

Helios solution

On-site treatment. Minimal footprint. Maximum compliance.

Helios evaporation technology is a compact, fully automated unit that treats your process water on-site and reduces hazardous waste volumes by up to 90%.

You pay per cubic meter treated. We own, maintain and operate the equipment. No capital investment, no technical risk.

Dafo Fomtec

Chemistry & pharmaceuticals

Challenge

Wash water from foam production contained hazardous chemicals that could not be handled using conventional methods and required destruction. Dafo Fomtec needed a safe and efficient solution that minimizes environmental impact.

Solution

A local treatment facility installed during spring and summer 2025, which uses low-temperature evaporation to purify the water. Automated systems and continuous monitoring ensure stable purification performance and high operational reliability.

Results

  • 150 m³ wash water treated per year
  • ≤90% waste volume reduction
  • 0.8 m³/day treatment capacity
  • 135,000 L drinking water saved annually
  • 2025 production start

Kenvue

Chemistry & pharmaceuticals

Challenge

Process water with high levels of organic substances created a large waste stream that could not be handled with conventional methods. Incineration was the only option, until now. Kenvue needed a local, energy-efficient solution that reduced waste volumes while creating value from residual streams.

Solution

A local facility that purifies all process water from two production streams. With CONTESS, water is separated from organic compounds. The clean fraction is discharged to municipal sewage, while the concentrate is sent to biogas production. Continuous monitoring ensures stable operation and high purification performance.

Results

  • 1,000 m³ process water treated per year
  • ≤90% waste volume reduction
  • 3 m³/day treatment capacity
  • 125 MWh renewable energy from concentrate
  • 2025 production start
  • 75% CO₂ savings
