In 2022, SYSAV in Malmö partnered with Helios Innovations on an early-stage development project to test and advance Helios’ purification technology — evaluating how different types of hazardous liquid waste could be treated and gathering insights to improve and scale the technology.
Malmö, Sweden
At the start of Helios’ development journey, practical trials were needed to understand which waste fractions could be handled with the new technology and to identify critical challenges in equipment and operation. The goal was to build knowledge about chemical compositions and behaviour during treatment — and to establish a foundation for future stable, commercial installations.
Small-scale tests and pilot trials were carried out during 2022, concluding in early 2023. Helios had the opportunity to test different waste types on-site — collecting chemical data, identifying technical improvements, and evaluating a new design. The project delivered valuable insights into both equipment and waste streams, and laid the groundwork for Helios Innovations’ first full-scale plants later built at Stena Recycling in Halmstad.

Key learnings about which hazardous waste fractions are best suited for Helios’ evaporation technology — informing future system design and operation.
Identification of equipment and process improvements that are now used in stable, full-scale operation at subsequent installations.
SYSAV and Helios built a joint experience base that continues to inform future projects and technology development.
The pilot project contributed directly to a safer and more efficient water purification process in future installations. Lessons learned at SYSAV were carried forward into the design of the full-scale demonstration plants at Stena Recycling in Halmstad.
The collaboration demonstrated the value of early-stage partnerships between waste management operators and technology developers — turning real-world challenges into actionable engineering insights.
