At Stena Recycling’s facility in Skarvikshamnen, Gothenburg, Helios Innovations implemented a custom-built evaporation plant to treat 8,000 m³ of heavily contaminated water — where conventional treatment methods fell short, delivering a solution that reduces waste volume by a factor of 20.
Gothenburg, Sweden
Tank wash water at the facility contained a mix of oil residues, heavy metals, PFAS, and other hazardous substances — making conventional treatment processes insufficient. An effective and flexible solution was needed to ensure discharge levels remained within permitted limits.
A custom-built evaporation plant operating at atmospheric pressure and approximately 80°C, complemented by activated carbon filters to ensure high purification performance. Advanced process control allows the plant to handle a wide range of contaminants while maintaining operational reliability through continuous monitoring.

From 8,000 m³ of contaminated water down to just 400 m³ of concentrate sent for destruction — a 20-fold reduction in waste volume.
Continuous sampling ensures that the treatment process consistently keeps discharge levels below regulatory limits.
Automated alarm systems and continuous monitoring ensure minimal maintenance and high operational reliability.
The agreement between Stena Recycling and Helios Innovations spans five years, during which the plant will also be used to treat incoming water from Stena Recycling’s customers.
This makes it an important addition to the company’s treatment capacity and strengthens sustainability in the handling of hazardous liquid waste across the region.
